PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS PAGE BEFORE OFFERING A HOME TO ONE OF MY KITTENS
The main considerations when breeding cats are
1. HEALTH - 2. TEMPERAMENT - 3. TYPE
When people contact me to enquire about kitten availability their main concerns are: is the kitten healthy and is the kitten friendly?
So although I am breeding to try and improve the TYPE of my kittens for the show bench most of my kittens will go to pet homes, therefore my main concerns have to be health and temperament.
The next two comments most frequently made are: why can i have a domestic (moggie) kitten at 6 - 8 weeks but have to wait to 13 -14 weeks for a pedigree kitten and I have/had one already but he/she doesn't like to cuddle or sit on my knee?
In my opinion the answer to the first of these is what causes the second question to arise. Pedigree kittens go at 13-14 weeks so they can be vaccinated first. At 6 - 8 weeks a kitten starts weaning from its mum and exploring the world around it. Now any GOOD breeder will play with cuddle and socialize the kitten to noises ect. still most of the kittens time will be spent with its litter mates. I have found that any kitten separated from its litter mates at this point becomes much more social to humans other cats dogs etc.
So why can't I take my kitten at 9 weeks and vaccinate it myself whilst it naturally socializes to me and my life style?
The only thing stopping this is a recommendation from affiliated cat associations and clubs that kittens are vaccinated first and so GOOD breeders who desire to operate within these guidelines and provide a healthy kitten that has had the best start in life. But there are now growing concerns from VETS and BREEDERS that TRADITIONAL VACCINES are doing more harm than good added to the problem that some vets are recommending a further vaccination at 16 weeks due to the fact that maternal antibodies are still causing interference with the immunities of some kittens when vaccinated at 9 & 12 weeks.
So what are we to do? keep kittens till they are 4-5 months old at which stage they can hardly be called a kitten!
I have decided after much thought and research to HOMEOPATHICALLY vaccinate my kittens during the period of 4 - 8 weeks and let them go into their new homes at 8 weeks with the recommendation that if new owners wish their kitten to be Traditionally Vaccinated they start this at 14 weeks to ensure full immunity is achieved.
